LIN XU    gallerybiography

Professor of fine arts at Brandon University, Lin Xu uses the medium of clay in a sculptural form to express her personal artistic knowledge and experiences. Born in Inner Mongolia, Ms. Xu first studied packaging engineering at Jilin University (China) where she learned how to design packages, boxes, and bottles. After concentrating and honing her English language skills, Xu went to Australia where she received a bachelor's degree in visual arts from the University of Sydney. Ms. Xu subsequently enrolled in graduate studies in ceramics at Washington State University at Pullman, where she received her MFA degree.

Her ceramic works focus on small-scale sculpture which explores the soft qualities of clay and large scale installations using universal symbols and subjects that are closely related to the human body. Says the artist of her work: "Structure, most easily understood when presented visually, has much of the character of a universal metaphor. Making objects is making meanings. We confer meanings on materials and objects by merging them with our history and personal psychological world. By doing this we unconsciously establish an invisible connection between the objects and our personal experience."
