Mary Beth Shaw's work is about layers. Whether on canvas or claybord, the first layer consists of somewhat random parts, such as imagery or text that has been discarded or cast off by others; torn or burned paper items, long forgotten photos, and vintage newspapers.
The artist continues to build layers and then excavates back down in areas as each piece develops. The media incorporated includes soft and oil pastel, acrylic paint, marker, pencil, ink and spray paint.
Originally from the midwest, the Xavier University graduate moved to San Francisco for five years and attended the University of California at Berkeley. She has participated in numerous juried competitions, group shows and Open Studio events within California and the Midwest. The artist teaches workshops in abstract painting, collage and paste paper painting. Her work is collected nationally by private individuals and corporations.
Shaw's work will be featured in a solo exhibition at phd Gallery opening March 7, 2009.
